About Our Sermon Series
How Will They Hear?
The first Sunday in November will conclude our Loaded Words series as we consider on our celebration of All Saints’ Day what it means to be “Sinners & Saints.” At the other end of the month, beyond Thanksgiving, we find ourselves already in the new church year and the season of Advent—more on that series at a later date. But sandwiched between those two Sundays comes our annual financial stewardship series, this year entitled How Will They Hear?
Back in May, Pastor Meyer preached on this same theme for our “Vision Sunday” (the day of our May Voters Assembly). On that day, Pastor Meyer emphasized a stewardship of time and talents, calling every member to serve in some capacity. After all, if we do not step forward to serve and support the ministries, how will they—those in our community, our school, and those who’ve wandered—hear? Now, six months later, we again consider the question, only from the perspective of financial stewardship.
Our Scriptural focus for these two Sundays will be 2 Corinthians 8 & 9. These two chapters are arguably Paul’s most thorough discussion on money without even mentioning “the M-word.” Christians in Corinth had—in one way or another—indicated to the apostle a refusal to participate in the financial ministry of the church. In short, St. Paul doesn’t lay on guilt or bark orders to the Corinthians, he simply relies on the Gospel to change their hearts and habits.
Leading up to the Voters Assembly on November 20, this series is meant to offer encouragement for what God can and will do through this congregation—HIS congregation—as we faithfully respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and ask again, “How Will They Hear?”
